Christopher Sembroski is an American Air Force veteran, a data engineer, and a commercial astronaut. He is among the four people who will be going into space as a mission specialist and managing payload and communications with his three other crew members for a three-day trip in space.

Wiki/Biography

Christopher Sembroski was born on Tuesday, August 28, 1979 (age 42 years; as of 2021) in Kannapolis, North Carolina. Christopher completed his junior schooling and went to the North Carolina School of Science and Mathematics to finish his high school. Further, he attended Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University to pursue his Bachelors degree of Science in Professional Aeronautics in 2007. Later, he joined the Community College of the Air Force as an associate of science.

Career

After completing his formal education, Christopher joined the US Air Force and started working as a Missile and Space Systems Electronics Maintenance Journeyman. In 2007, he was promoted to the position of Air Transportation Journeyman. While working in the Air Force, he also worked as a technician for ATS Automation Inc. He also volunteered to be deployed in Iraq. In 2014, he moved to MacDonald-Miller Facility Solutions in Everett as a Senior Building Performance Specialist till October 2020. In March 2021, Christopher became a part of the first all-civilian mission to space called Inspiration4. The project aims to take civilians in a SpaceX Dragon spacecraft attached to a Falcon9 rocket, and spend three days in low earth orbit. The project aims to raise $200 million to support St. Jude Childrens Research Hospital and improve its healthcare facilities.

Facts/Trivia

  • In college, Christopher was a part of a non-profit organization, ProSpace, that had people who were advocating for private spaceflight areas. Christopher also worked as a counselor at a Space Camp, which is a government-funded space camp in Alabama that promotes science, technology, engineering, and other subjects.
  • The space mission is initiated by the CEO of Shift4 Payments, Jared Issacman, who started an online raffle for the tickets which attracted more than 72,000 entries and helped him raise millions of dollars. The crew will go in orbit by the end of the year 2021.
  • Christopher also applied for the raffle but instead of him, a friend of his from his college days won the trip to orbit. However, Christophers friend gave him the ticket knowing that he is a huge fan of Earth and outer space. When he got the news from his friend, he was shocked and he said-

    Oh, I€™m going to space? You picked me? Wow. Cool.€™ I mean, it was a moment of shock,€

  • Christopher talked about his passion for rocket science and outer space. During an interview, he talked about the first time he witnessed a rocket launch and said-

    Seeing my very first rocket launch in person really cemented that passion deep into me. Once you see your very first live, real-size rocket launch to space, there really are very few other experiences like that, for me, that give you goosebumps, that really just kind of change who you are as a person.€

  • Christopher is often referred to as hopeful, empathetic, and passionate about life and its possibilities. Before the mission, Christopher has made several donations to the hospital to support their cause.
  • Other members of the crew are, Jared Issacman, the CEO of Shift4 Payments, Sian Proctor, a 51-year-old community college professor hailing from Tempe, Arizona. The last seat was given to Hayley Arceneaux, who is a former patient of St. Jude and now works as a physician assistant there. At the age of 29, Hayley will be the youngest American to ever go to space and the first person in space with prosthetic body parts. She was diagnosed with bone cancer and during her treatment, some parts of her left leg were replaced with metal rods.

  • Post announcements, the team was taken to Los Angeles where they visited the SpaceX headquarters to check out the premises and then they were sent to the University of California, Los Angeles for some mandatory health checkups. After this, the crew members went to California where they were given the same training that a NASA astronaut goes through before going to space.
